Prepositions →  Prepositions of Place, Prepositions of Location

Prepositions of Place is one of the topics in English grammar that every learner must know or study. It deals with the position of things relative to other things. The grammar or lesson is best explained using illustrations or photos which show where things usually furniture and other kitchen utensils or office equipment are arranged in a room. Sometimes, students have to identify objects in the room first before continuing to identify their relative positions using such prepositions as behind, on, in, next to, under, above and across from. These are the prepositions of place. Besides indicating places, prepositions can also be used in instructions using the affirmative and negative imperative. For example: Instructions on how to use a fax machine

Put the document that you want to send in this slot. The fax machine will pull the paper in. Then dial the telephone number. After that, press the START button. Don't put newspaper in.

There are some grammar books that students can read to study about prepositions of place. Try to read English Grammar in Use by Raymond Murphy. If the book is too difficult, Focus on Grammar Introductory Course can provide an easy to understand explanation for you.
