Mencoba mempelajari bahasa Inggris dengan menonton berita dalam bahasa Inggris kadang-kadang menyebabkan frustasi bagi mereka yang masih berada di tingkat pemula. Pengucapan kata yang dibaca oleh penyiar berita tidak terdengar jelas, cepat dan sering penuh dengan istilah-istilah baru. Bagi pelajar bahasa Inggris pemula, menonton, membaca dan mendengar berita bukanlah hal yang kami rekomendasikan. Tetapi jika Anda berada pada level menengah atau mahir, membaca berita dalam bahasa Inggris sangatlah kami sarankan. Hal ini mungkin sulit pada mulanya tetapi semakin banyak kita menonton berita bahasa Inggris, semakin baik dan cepat pemahan kita tentang bahasa Inggris tersebut. Tidak banyak situs berita bahasa Inggris yang menyediakan bahan belajar berita bagi siswa tingkat pemula. Ada dua situs yang terkenal, yakni: BBC Learning English dan VOA Special English Programs yang bisa Anda kunjungi dengan mengetik nama-nama mereka di mesin pencari, contohnya Google atau Yahoo. TV berita yang saya sebutkan di atas menyediakan rekaman suara dan video serta transkrip khusus buat mereka yang sedang belajar bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa kedua atau bahasa asing. Kosakata yang mereka gunakan dalam berita telah diadaptasi untuk membantu pelajar bahasa Inggris. Jadi jika Anda tertarik mendengar atau membaca berita dalam bahasa Inggris khusus, silahkan mengunjungi tv berita di atas yang baru saja saya sebut tadi. Dalam tahun-tahun belakangan ini, banyak negara yang memiliki program TV yang disiarkan dalam bahasa Inggris. Contohnya, CCTV9 dari Republic Rakyat China yang sepenuhnya disiarkan dalam bahasa Inggris, NHK dari Jepang yang juga memiliki program bahasa Inggris yang bertujuan memperkenalkan atau mempromosikan hal yang berkaitan dengan masyarakat Jepang dan kebudayaan mereka ke seluruh dunia. Penggunaan bahasa Inggris oleh banyak stasiun khususnya pada program-program satelit ke seluruh dunia telah membantu pelajar bahasa Inggris untuk memperkaya pemahaman dan pengetahuan mereka mengenai bahasa internasional dan pada saat yang sama memperluas wawasan mereka tentang negara dan budaya lain. Banyak orang tidak tertarik menonton berita yang berkaitan dengan politik dan masalah-masalah yang rumit. Jika Anda adalah salah satu dari mereka maka saya akan merekomendasikan sebuah channel TV satelit yang baik. Namanya adalah Travel Channel. Learning English - Watching news is one of the most recommended ways that students need to do to master English. However, because the newscasters read the news in faster speed, beginning English learners often get frustrated when trying to catch the pronunciations of words that they say and their meanings. VOA or the Voice of America has a program called special English that contains news that are written using only between 1500 words. These words are often called core vocabulary. Most often new words are introduced during the reading of news but they are usually explained by the newscasters. The sentences that are written and read during the news program are short enabling the listeners and tv audiences to understand their meaning easily. The list of the 1500 words has been provided for free by the VOA in their website. If you want to get it, please visit VOA's special English website and download a file called Word Book.

If the national tv station in your country does not provide or does not have any cooperation with VOA, you still can watch its broadcast by using satellite tv antenna. A satellite disk and a receiver device in Indonesia is between 150 to 250 US dollars. Ask the technician of the electronic shop whether he can assist you in finding the frequency and the symbol rate of the VOA so that you can watch the English News from the comfort of your own home. For English learners who have been in intermediate or pre-advanced levels, they can watch the news program that are read in normal speed from such tv stations as Al Jazeera, BBC, VOA, CNA, CCTV9, NHK World and Arirang. These TV stations broadcast world news as well as national news from the respective countries.

Because new words are often introduced every time a new event is read, beginning English learners need a good dictionary to find their meanings. I personally recommend Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English. You can order this dictionary from online bookstores such as Amazon.com or Barnes and Noble.com. This dictionary contains a lot of newly formed words that we usually cannot find in conventional dictionaries. The price of this dictionary might be slightly hire than other dictionaries that you may find in the bookstore in your town but it is a good investment for your hard work in mastering English language. You can use it not only for watching news but for your work or research.

International working environment that you often see in multi-national companies often demand the use of English language among the employees to communicate one - another. In addition because international events greatly influenced business environment, the ability to understand news in English is a must. When people in business sectors want to make certain business decisions for certain world region, they can make better decision if they now what is now going on in the region or country.  For instance, no companies want to do a business or investment project Libya. But companies that manufacture camping gear and tents will go there to offer their products to international NGOs and UN organization where the tents can be used for temporary shelter or accommodation for the refugees that are fleeing their homes.
