Pocket PC is a personal computing device that we can put inside our pocket. Today it is called smart phone. Depending on the operating system that is developed by the manufacturers of the pocket PC, the portable computer can be powered by such operating systems as Windows Mobile, webOS, Symbian, Mac OS X, Android or bada. In the past, people always associated Pocket PCs with handheld computers that were installed with Windows Mobile as their operating system. Now the varieties of the available operating systems in smart phones trigger the development of internet applications that are suitable for anybody. As portable computers, pocket PCs can be used to take pictures, write emails or play games. I personally use an old HP iPAQ rx 3400 series as e-book reader. Its wide screen provides enough space for me to read e-books, or pages of websites that I have stored in its storage card. This HP iPAQ has unique wireless features which we can use to turn on televisions, dvd player, or ADC audio receiver. Because I am not a person who likes controlling everything with this remote control device, I don't use the features. The HP Photosmart can make 1.2 mega pixel photographs. With 4x digital zoom, the camera function of this HP iPAQ rx 3400 is good enough for taking pictures that are related to travel, family or recreational activities. Serious photographers are advised to use digital cameras that are now available on the market in cheaper price.
Because the HP iPAQ is powered by Windows MobileTM 2003 Second Edition, it can run several pocket versions of Windows based applications that we usually find in desktop computers such as Microsoft Word, Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player, Excel, Pocket MSN and Calculator. The Windows Media Player 10 Mobile for Pocket PC runs MPEG Layer-3 audio compression technology that has been licensed by Fraunhofer IIS and Thomson multimedia. For printing, the iPAQ uses HP Mobile Printing System that is supported by Expat from Thai Open source Software Center Ltd and Clark Cooper.
Pocket PC is actually an advanced PDA (Personal Data Assistant). The input of data into the device is mostly done by touching the virtual keyboard on the screen of the PDA. The Exchange of files is mostly Bluetooth and Wi-Fi network. Large amount of data or information downloaded from the internet can be stored in memory card. Today an SD memory card can have large data storage capacity up to 8 GB. Access to PCs can be done using wireless technology called the iPAQ Mobile Media that is supported by NevoMedia server. Pocket PCs are powerful handheld computers that were used by businessman who frequently traveled to many places. Even though modern pocket PC or smart phones have wide screen, their virtually buttons are often too small for human fingers. So, it is not surprising to see that now they were being replaced by large screen iPad, Playbook, and Netbook. Today more people use iPad, Play book from Blackberry, Netbook and even laptop as their mobile computing device because these electronic machines have more features and their keyboards are big enough for their fingers. by Charles Roring.
