Surabaya as the second largest city in Indonesia can be reached by airplanes, buses and passenger ships depending on where you are right now. If you are in Jakarta, you can take Lion Air, Batavia Air or Mandala Air. To know the most up to date price of the ticket, you can go to each of the airlines that I have mentioned in the previous sentence. You can book a flight via website or go directly to any ticket agency or representative office of each airline that you can easily find in most of the cities in Indonesia. As an important trading city, Surabaya's international airport - Juanda operates 24/365 serving domestic and international flights. Every day thousands of people arrive and leave this airport. It is located in Sidoarjo, an industrial town not far from Surabaya - the capital of East Java province of the Republic of Indonesia. Several years ago, Sidoarjo attracted the attention of mass media due to the mud volcano that releases millions of tons of mud that destroy thousands of houses near the town. Although the attention is now dwindling, the mud volcano still releases a lot of mud until now. Besides the mud volcano, Sidoarjo has an interesting tourist attraction in Tanggulangin area. Here, tourists can buy leather bags, shoes and other products that are manufactured by the villagers as part of their home industry businesses.
Because this city is a trading hub in Indonesia, most of the flights to Surabaya are filled with businessmen and merchants. They come to buy or sell goods. Goods are exported or imported through Tanjung Perak harbor. The container terminal in this harbor plays a very important role in supporting the economic activity of Indonesia. Surabaya might not be as famous as Denpasar Bali in the international tourism business but economically, it is the second most populous city in Indonesia. Domestic tourists like to visit Surabaya to do their shopping in such malls as Tunjungan, Galaxi and Pakuwon. Parents from cities and towns in East Indonesia like to bring their children to city by buses or PELNI passenger ships and airplanes during school holiday. No wonder tt is also considered as a trading hub for East Indonesia region.
If you want to go to Malang city that is located nearly 100 kilometer to the south of Surabaya, you can take a direct flight from Jakarta by Garuda Indonesia or Sriwijaya air. You don't need to fly to Surabaya first. Suppose that you are now in Surabaya and want to go to Malang before continuing your trip to Batu or Mount Bromo. If this is your case, you can go by bus or train. The recent minor eruptions from Mount Bromo make people consider of canceling their flights to Surabaya city. As a matter of fact, flights to Surabaya are still safe. Domestic and international airplanes are always informed by air traffic controller and department of transportation about the latest weather condition in cities in Indonesia to ensure the flight safety in areas where there are volcano activities or extreme changes in weather. by Charles Roring
