If you are interested
in mastering watercolor painting techniques, you need some basic skills to
practice with. First, the sketching technique. Most beginning watercolorist draw
the subject that they want to paint using pencils. The type of pencil that I
recommend is a semi soft 2B graphite pencil. You can find it easily in a
bookstore or an art shop that sells art supplies. They usually sell tubes of
various watercolor, brush and books. Buying a book about drawing technique will
help you master the basic drawing skills such as the proportion, perspective and
shades. Through this article, I would like to recommend a book entitled: Draw
and Sketch Figures - sketch with confidence in 6 steps or less written by
Lucy Watson. Another title that I believe can help you enhance your skill is
Pencil Sketching by Thomas C. Wang. If you go to an art shop and do not find
the drawing instruction book, you still can buy other books that can give you
some explanations about art drawing. There are a lot books about them and if
there is no art shops or gallery in your town, you can find them by search
drawing instruction books from the internet.
Besides studying how to make sketches or illustrations, you need to study the
basic techniques for watercoloring. I have read a number of interesting books
about them and I want to recommend some of them here:
Watercolor painting for dummies by Colette Pitcher
Watercolor Workshop - Simple Steps to Success by Glynis Barnes-Mellish
Actually there are
other books that are related to art that you can read to widen your knowledge
about art.
Let's say that you have bought a lot of books about sketching, drawing, and
watercoloring but you feel that the artworks that you created are still not
perfect. Even though there are a lot of art books on your bookshelves, they are
only information that you need to practice with. All of the books cannot make
you a professional artist unless you implement the techniques described in them
regularly. If you don't practice your drawing skills regularly, you will not be
able to improve the skills. In other words, the more you paint with watercolor,
the better your skills will be. You may get frustrated at the earliest stages of
your study but don't give up. Every beginning artist has experienced the same
thing. I personally need some years of practice before I can confidently draw
subjects such as human being or birds.
I also like to sketch things that I see in public spaces whenever I am waiting for a car at bus terminal. I have a diary that I use to write and sketch. You can see some of the most recent sketches that I made while waiting for the bus to leave for Warkapi village several days ago. You can see that I drew an ice-cream art, a love doll and the mirror or reflector of the bus. Most often when we travel to certain places, we will see interesting subject, scenery or human activities, therefore, I suggest to every beginning artist to carry a sketch book so that he or she will be able to transfer them into a beautiful artworks which can later be enhanced into a watercolor painting once the artist returns to his or her home. by Charles Roring
