There are a number of reasons why people decide to learn English. The most popular one is to find a job that pays higher income. Today, a lot of multi national companies require their employees to use English in work places. Employees also need to master English language if they are sent abroad. To assess how well their employees communicate in this international language, their employers request TOEIC scores from them during recruitment process or as a pre-requisite for career advancement. And to get high TOEIC scores, these employees have to study hard. National based companies that want to expand their businesses abroad will likely to hire professionals who are fluent in written and spoken English. Most often export oriented products whether electronics or agricultural ones have to be labeled with explanations that are written in English. Electronic products usually have to be equipped with manual books to help customers learn how to use them. These manuals books are written in several languages including English.
In addition to its use in international working environment, English is also needed by students who want to study abroad. Universities in the United States of America and other English speaking countries mention TOEFL or IELTS scores in the admission requirements from international students. Courses are taught and textbooks are written in English. Without a good command of English, students will face difficulties in their efforts to finish their study. So, what's your reason for studying English?
English is highly used in tourism or travel and hospitality industries. People who work in these sectors need English to serve their customers who mostly come from many different countries. Governments around the world have tourism departments that are opened to promote the tourism potentials in the respective countries. Tourism and travel sectors can accelerate economic developments that will improve the standard of living of the citizens. If we take a look at schools that provide tourism and hospitality studies, English language is taught as a vital subject that students have to pass.
Beginning English learners are often confused by two main stream of dialects, i.e. American and British English. Actually, they should not be afraid of some differences in pronunciation, grammar and vocabularies between them. People who have been in advanced levels do not face difficulties when speaking or listening the two different English dialects. To familiar themselves with British English, they can watch BBC or open its website. Those who want to practice speaking American English can buy a book entitled: McGraw-Hill's Conversational American English from Amazon. by Charles Roring
