Some photos that I made using Nikon P500 are presented below. Most of them were captured when I was traveling with foreign tourists at the southern coast of Mansinam island. This tiny tropical island is a tourist destination in Manokwari regency of the Republic of Indonesia.
There are a lot of activities which tourists can enjoy while visiting Manokwari. Those are love rainforest can go hiking in Arfak mountains whereas those who love the sea can snorkel over the coral reef of Mansinam, Lemon or Raimuti islands.
Picture 1. The White Sandy Beach of Mansinam Island.
As shown in the first picture, the southern coast of Mansinam island is covered by white sandy beach that is a nice spot for sunbathing. Not far from this beach, tourists can see various species of tropical fish that live among the corals of this island at depths between 0.5 to 10 meters. Because there are no diving centers in Manokwari, tourists need to bring their own snorkeling masks. To go Manokwari, tourists need to fly from their country to Jakarta or Denpasar. These are two important tourist hub in Indonesia. After that they can take a domestic flight to Manokwari. When they have arrived in Manokwari, they can continue their trip to Mansinam island by water taxi from the Ketapang boat station. The standard rate per person is only Rp. 3,000.
Picture 2. Phinisi Sailing Boat Mooring in Dorey bay
I took the first and the second pictures when I was traveling with 4 Polish tourists in Mansinam and Lemon islands. This second photograph was shot by me using Nikon P500 when we were in Lemon island. The weather was not good at that time because it was drizzling when I captured the subject. I had to set my camera to automatic and magnify my subject, which is a phinisi sailing boat, using the 36x optical zoom that the camera had. When the boat had been well positioned on the LCD screen of my super zoom camera, I immediately pressed the shutter button. After that I and the Polish tourists had to walk fast to a shelter near a village in Lemon island to wait for a water taxi that would take us back to Ketapang boat station in Kwawi area of Manokwari.
Upon closer inspection of the photograph I could say that the boat might have been used by tourists who wanted to do some shipwreck diving tours around the bay. I know that there are some World War II shipwrecks in this bay.
Picture 3. A bridge near Arfak mountains in Prafi area
In the first paragraph, I said that tourists can go hiking in Arfak mountains. There, they can see various species of birds of paradise, cockatoo, kuskus, and tree kangaroo. The trip to Arfak mountains takes around 1 to 5 hours depending on the destination. If the destination is the high elevation forest, then we will have to pass a bridge in Prafi. The bridge was made of stainless steel trusses probably imported from Australia.
Nikon Coolpix P500 is my newest photographic device. I liked it very much because it could magnify distant subjects such as birds, or orchids in tall trees up to 36 times. The camera is also good in capturing close up subjects such as flowers, butterflies and beetles using Macro setting of the digital camera. The CMOS sensor of the camera greatly enhances the quality of the photographs that I make even in low light condition.
Before using Nikon Coolpix, most of my cameras were the pocket ones whose maximum optical zoom was between 3 to 4 times. I also had an underwater camera Panasonic Lumix DMC FT3 which was not really sturdy. It broke after I had used it for snorkeling at Angresi beach.
Nikon Coolpix P500 is the photographic device that I recommend to anybody who needs a small but powerful bridge camera that is able to capture distant subjects. Nature photographers need this camera if their D-SLR cameras and their telephoto lenses are too heavy to be carried when they climb a mountain or when they have a long walk deep in the jungle of tropical rainforest.
