Suitable for taking underwater picture while doing snorkeling
I have just bought a new waterproof digital camera for taking underwater pictures while I go snorkeling with tourists. This waterproof digital camera is able to withstand water pressure up to 12 meters or 40 feet below sea surface. My previous digital still photo camera - the Sony Cybershot DSC-W310 cannot work properly anymore. Its LCD screen does not show the picture which I want to shoot if I turn it on. With waterproof feature which the DMC-FT3 digital camera has, I am now able to shoot reef fish and coral without any need of using dicapac water-housing anymore. When I used my pocket camera, the Sony Cybershot DSC-W310, I had to protect it with the waterproof casing manufactured by Dicapac. Now I can make clearer underwater pictures and panoramic photographs at the same time. According to the information that is printed on the package of the Panasonic FT3 Lumix, this digital camera has successfully won the 2011 TIPA Awards for Best Rugged Compact Camera. When I ordered it from an online store in Jakarta, I didn't know that it is the best pocket camera for 2011.
Because this camera is still new, I haven't used it for taking snorkeling pictures. Underwater photography is one of my hobbies. There are a lot of species of fish that I want to write about in this article to raise the awareness of people in Manokwari, the city where I live, about the important preserving the coral reef. From 24 to 26 July 2011, I went to Kwau village of Arfak mountains. I guided two Polish tourists on a three days bird-watching trips in the slopes of the mountains. While walking with them, I tried using this new camera not for taking pictures of birds in tall trees but for taking pictures of the sceneries. For birdwatching in the tropical rainforest of Manokwari, birders usually use binoculars or long lens SLR camera. I plan to buy one next year. I shot some pictures of the rainforest, children and some porters who helped me guiding the tourists. The quality of the photographs is very good. Although its optical zoom is only 4.6 times - not suitable for bird-watching, I think it is a nice investment for a tourist guide like me who frequently travels with tourists to remote areas in New Guinea island of Indonesia.
Some features of the camera that I still need to study are the GPS, compass, altimeter and barometer. The camera is also able to make 3D photograph. I have to read its operating instruction books if I want to know how to use them properly. This is the best waterproof digital camera that I highly recommend to snorkelers.
Another waterproof camera that I see now available on the market is Nikon Coolpix AW100. The compact camera that is powered with 16 MP CMOS sensor and anti reflection coating on the surface of its Nikkor lens make the Nikon Coolpix AW100 more attractive to snorkeling enthusiasts who are serious in creating crystal clear underwater photographs of coral reef and ornamental fish. Buying a new underwater digital camera can be a nice decision if you know that you will use it frequently. If you are a coral reef enthusiast or professional scuba divers, a good camera such as Panasonic Lumix DMC- FT3 that is equipped with water housing is a nice investment. But if you only plan to use it once a year when traveling to tropical region on your holiday, purchasing Dicapac waterproof case for your pocket camera can be a wise decision. by Charles Roring
