Numfor is a tropical paradise island in the Geelvink bay of New Guinea. I have visited the island several times with some European travelers. There are  2 ways to reach the island from Manokwari city. First, we can go by airplane operated by Susi Air. And second, we can go by ferry boat. If we go by airplane, we will land at an airstrip in Yemburwo village. If we go by ferry boat, we will arrive at a harbor in the south of the island.

Numfor is surrounded by coral reef which makes it an interesting destination for travelers who want to enjoy snorkeling and scuba diving. Unfortunately, there are no diving centers in the island. Unless tourists bring their own diving gear, they can only enjoy snorkeling there. My favorite spots are the coral reef of Manem island - a 1-hour boat trip from Numfor. I went there for the first time in October 2010 with three Dutch tourists, Wally, Trudy and Lian.

Photographs created by Jettie using Nikon D50

After that I went to Numfor island again with Monique and Jettie Meulbroek. Jettie was very fond of nature photography. You can see some of her works on the left of this article. She used Nikon D50 to make these photographs.  The Nikon D50 is an SLR camera that produces high quality pictures. These photographs were captured in Amberimasi Lagoon that was located on the western region of Numfor island. We arrived in a guesthouse located at the lagoon in the afternoon. While waiting for the house keeper to open the door for us, we drank some coconut juice and took some pictures of any subjects from our surroundings.

Sunset in Amberimasi Lagoon

The sunset was coming and Jettie was busy finding interesting subjects for her photographic artworks. I did not think of taking pictures. All I wanted at that time was swimming. Jettie was not a photographer by profession but the quality of the photographs which she made with her D-SLR camera, the Nikon D50, was excellent. She was a nurse working for a mother and child project in Senopi village of New Guinea. For the purpose of internet presentation, I have to resize the photographs and reduce their pixels so that they can be loaded faster on the screen of your computer.

Photograph 1. Two boys rowing their canoe

As you can see on the first picture, two boys were rowing their outrigger canoe at sea with the glare of sunlight at the back ground. I really love this photograph. In my opinion, her shooting angle is perfect. The next day, these boys were the ones who took us to a coral reef area near Numpuri island where we saw various species of sea stars and snorkeling in the afternoon.

Photograph 2. A boy was playing with water

In the second photograph, we can see a boy was playing with water during a sunset. Although the sun was not captured by the camera, its light can be seen on the surface of the rippling sea water. The silhouette of the boy with some water on his fingers is the vocal point of this photograph. Jettie brilliantly captured the moments.

Photograph 3. the Amberimasi Lagoon just before the sunset

The sequence of shooting started from the third picture, then the second, and finally the first one. In the third picture, the day was still bright and the sun was about to set in the west. If we compare the color of the third photograph to the second and the first ones, we can see that it is bluish gray.

All of these pictures are in their original natural colors. I do not change them at all. They show us how beautiful the lagoon is. The Amberimasi lagoon is a quiet place suitable for anybody who wants to escape for a while from their hectic city living lifestyle before going back again feeling refreshed and more energetic.

When I was traveling with Jettie and Monique, I carried with me Sony D-SLR-A350 Camera. I will write a review about it in a separate article. Now, I don't use that camera anymore because I have already bought a compact camera Nikon P500 that is powerful in shooting distant subjects such as birds and boats in the middle of the sea. Nikon P500 is a super zoom digital camera that is powered with 36 x optical zoom (equivalent to 810 mm in a standard 35 mm camera lens format). You can read some of my reviews about its telephoto capability that is suitable for nature photography.

How to get there?

Amberimasi Lagoon is located in the east of Numfor island. To visit this island, first you need to fly from your country to Jakarta or Denpasar. These are two important cities in the Republic of Indonesia. After that take a domestic flight to Manokwari city - the capital of West Papua province. From Manokwari, I will accompany you to Numfor island by ferry boat or by airplane. If you still need more information about traveling to Amberimasi Lagoon or traveling around Manokwari, please, contact me, Charles Roring, via my emails: peace4wp@gmail.com or lroring@yahoo.com.
