A good English course does not have to be expensive. It can be a small English school in your neighborhood or an international language school with hundreds of branches around the world.  Today, a lot of English course offer programs at more reasonable price.

When someone wants to enroll on a course program, he has to take a placement test. The test is needed to assess his or her level. An English learner cannot force himself to study English on a level that is higher than his actual level. He will find it difficult and quit studying.

Usually, an English school hire local teacher to teach beginners. For intermediate and advanced learners, the teachers can be native speakers. Native speakers who work as English teachers must have special certifications such as TEFL (Teaching English as Foreign Language) or TESOL (Teaching English as Second and Other Language). Certification is important to make sure that the teachers know how to interact with students in the classrooms.

A good English course must provide a good teaching and learning materials both for its teachers and students. The textbooks have to be fully illustrated with colorful photos or pictures. Most of the course books are now accompanied with audio CDs to help students practice listening and speaking both in the classroom and at home. CD players have to be provided in the classroom. Sometimes a teacher prefer to read the conversation or sentences in the textbook by himself. After that he will ask the students to repeat until they pronounce the sentences correctly.

The number of students for every class program has to be between four to ten. If there is only one student, it will not be an interesting course. If there are thirty students, the course will not be effective. Every student must have the opportunity to practice speaking in the classroom.

Upon the completion of every lesson, students must take achievement test. Teachers can measure the progress of their students from this test.

English schools that provide General English program must also provide library where students can borrow English books. Encouraging students to read is very important. They can absorb and memorize more new words from reading.
