Papuan Birds of Paradise
Birds of paradise is the proud of Papuan people. It is one of the most beautiful birds in the world. Bird watching in Papua is now getting popular due to the availability of free online videos on Youtube that depict how these birds dance to attract their female. Birds of paradise have been hunted for years. In 1858, a British naturalis, Alfred Russel Wallace conducted an expedition to Dorey bay of Manokwari Papua to study birds of paradise. In his book the Malay Archipelago, he said that the population of birds of paradise in the Dorey bay, particulary on the Table Mountain were not many due to frequent shootings by hunters. Now birds of paradise are traded in high prices in Indonesia and abroad. Papuan indigenous people use the feather of these birds to decorate their hair when wearing traditional costumes for performing traditional rituals or dances. In recent years, birds of paradise are in danger of extinction due to rapid deforestation that occur both in Papua New Guinea and West Papua (the western half of the island that is currently under the administration of the Republic of Indonesia.
