Snorkeling is a favorite
water-sport activity which many
tourists like to do while traveling to Manokwari. By snorkeling,
we can observe coral
reef and marine fish that live between 1 to 10 meters below the
surface of the sea. When we enjoy snorkeling, we do not carry
heavy scuba diving tanks on our back. So we cannot stay long in the water.
We will spend most of our time swimming on the surface of the
water but we can dive for around one minute to see the coral
reef in closer distance and move up again to the surface. We breath through J pipe that connects
our mouth and the air.
Snorkeling equipment is not expensive. To be able to snorkel
around the coral reef, we need snorkeling masks, and fins which
can help us move faster in the water. Actually fins are not
really needed. Moving slowly over the coral reef is better
because we can enjoy the beauty of the underwater world well. In
addition, when we move slowly over the reef, fish will not be
afraid of us. Before buying a snorkeling mask, we have to try it
to make sure that it is fit on our face and when we wear it,
there will be no leakages. Some people who cannot swim, can
still enjoy snorkeling if they wear snorkeling vests. These
vests will provide enough buoyancy to the snorkelers while they
are swimming.
As snorkeling destination, Manokwari city can easily be reached
by plane from any major cities in Indonesia. If you are now in
Europe, North America or Australia, you can take an
international flight to one of the cities in Indonesia such as
Jakarta, Manado, Denpasar, Surabaya, Makassar. After that,
please, take a domestic flight to Manokwari city.
The best time to snorkel in Dorey bay of Manokwari. As a tourist guide, I can say that the perfect time to snorkel is in the morning when the weather is bright. In addition, coral reef and other marine species living in it will be able to been seen during low tide. It is easy to know when the low tide comes. We can just ask the fishermen around the Mansinam, Raimuti, or Lemon islands or refer to special chart that depends on the rotation of the moon around the earth.
Please, do not brake the corals by not standing on them when snorkeling. Try to practice neutral buoyancy or flying in the sea water. By doing this, a snorkeler will be able to minimize any hard impact with the fragile corals. Fishermen who provide boat rent services for tourists in Manokwari bay have also been told not to throw anchor on the corals. They can stop their boats and remain drifting at sea. They can adjust their position by using small wooden oars. By applying these principles, snorkeling will be a nice sport that opens up great possibilities for tourists who want to explore the beauty of the coral reef and at the same time provide jobs to the coastal villagers in Manokwari and preserve the marine environment. Coral reef in the Dorey bay of Manokwari is rich of tropical fish species. Some of them are surgeon fish, lion fish, damsel fish, dolphins, yellow crown demoiselle, and anemone fish.
On 17 August 2011, I went snorkeling with two
Dutch tourists along the shore of Angresi beach that is located
near the foot of Arfak mountains. I brought with me my new
underwater camera. It's a Panasonic DMC-FT3. It was my first
time using the waterproof camera. I took a lot of pictures of
the table corals, brain corals and the fish that I saw while
snorkeling in the morning.
If you are not experienced enough to snorkel above the coral
reef, bring with you an inner rubber tire that will help you
float on the water. You can observe the coral reef without
breaking any of the corals that have been the breeding ground of
various marine species.
If you want to take photographs of the coral reef, you can buy an underwater film camera which you can use only once. There are now camera manufacturers that sell digital underwater photo camera. This might be very expensive. But if you can buy it, you can use the device many times. Usually the photo camera is used by transferring the files via blue tooth technology. It means you will not use a USB cable to transfer the photographs that you have taken from the digital underwater photo camera to your computer.
