At
a slope near the Asai beach of Manokwari regency of West Papua province of
Indonesia, there is a beautiful wooden
house owned by Mr. Solke Munneke. He was a teacher at an engineering school in
the Netherlands. He designed and built the house himself. The main material of
the house from the pillars, to the floors, and walls, is merbau wood, a hardwood
that is an endemic plant in New Guinea island. This is one of the best tropical
houses in terms of its ventilating system. Mr. Munneke knows that he has to apply
principles of energy efficiency when designing his house. Passive cooling system
has been created intelligently in the construction through a number of ways. For example, he does not cover the
front view of the house that is facing the Pacific ocean with walls or glass
windows. This wide opening
enables air to flow freely inside the house. In addition, he constructed a small
fish pond at the back of the house. Near the top of the hill spring water comes out of the ground. Before
it is used for domestic consumption and the pond, it is collected in weir some fifty meters behind the house. Various beautiful
flower and fruit plants also grow around the wooden house. In the morning when the
colorful flowers begin to bloom, butterflies come to suck the nectar. Sunlight
brightens the whole rooms making it a healthy house in the tropical region. At
night, sometimes we can see the lights of the big ships at sea. The surrounding
area of the house is still covered with green vegetation of the tropical
rainforest of Manokwari of West
Papua. The sounds of waves, the singing birds and the moving leaves, twigs and branches
blown by the wind are the natural music that decorate the peaceful atmosphere of
the house.
I
visited this house twice in July 2010. The first one was to survey the place
for accessing whether it is a good place for tourists and the second time
was when I brought the first tourists there - a family of five people. The
villagers living a little bit far from the Munneke's house work as farmers and fishermen. The coral reef
that thrive along the coastal region provide abundant fish and lobster. In addition, the
tropical rainforest that is located only a stone throw away from the house is a
perfect place for bird-watching and other eco-tourism activities. When I was
standing in the living room, I was amazed by the beautiful view of the Pacific
Ocean.
Tourists like to visit the house and have some nice conversation with Mr. Munneke, his wife and two children. From him, I know that he intends to sell the house because he wants to bring his children to school which is located near the city center of Manokwari. The house is very suitable to be converted into beach resort. The land area of the house is big, able to accommodate more cottages for tourists or beach lovers who want to stay there for a few days. This can also be a favorite holiday destination for newly married couples who want to enjoy their honeymoon there. If you are interested in buying the house, you can contact him via his email: sajmunneke@hotmail.com
