Some tourists who find this website often ask a question about Manokwari Map. They want to know where Manokwari is and how to get there. Well, I have been trying to give or present some maps that can be used by travelers who want to visit this tropical city. Because the number of tourists coming to Manokwari is increasing, there has to be a comprehensive map that people can use to go around the city. As a matter of fact, Google Earth has provided such map but it does not give enough explanation about the name of streets and buildings. The map in Google Earth is very good to be used as the main reference for people who want to visit this city because it clearly shows the locations of airport, ship harbor, hotels and streets and other important buildings. To help tourists identify interesting places which have become tourist attractions in Manokwari city and its surrounding, I have copied the maps from Google Earth and given names on certain places.

Kaki island - To go to Kaki island, you need to take a public transportation, a rented car, or ride bicycle to Nuni village. It is about one hour car ride from Manokwari city to Nuni village which is a coastal village located in the northern coast of the regency. After you arrive in the village, find a local fisherman that has a motorized outrigger boat. Here we call such boat as "motor johnson." Eco-tourism activities which tourists can enjoy in Kaki island is swimming, snorkeling over the beautiful coral reef and eating grilled fish or lobster which can be bought from the local fisherman.

Northern Coast - This is a long coast stretching from villages in Amban pante to villages in Pantai Yonsoribo. From December to February, the waves are usually big. This is a good time for surfing.

Manokwari city - This the capital of West Papua province. The center of government administration and the center of trade.

Table Mountain - Some tourist attractions or activities are hiking, bird watching, butterfly watching and caving. visiting Papuan artists who make paintings, woven cloth and wooden carvings. I frequently guide tourists who want to go to Table Mountain. The slope leading to the mountain is quite steep but when you have been on its top, the mountain is quite flat.

Pasir Putih beach - Here, tourists can swim and drink coconut juice or eat rujak (an Indonesian spicy fruit salad). Please, do not wear bikini while swimming at Pasir Putih beach.  Just use ojek (motorcycle taxi to bring you to the white sandy beach). On Sundays, city dwellers like to go there so, you might not feel comfortable being in such crowded beach. My recommendation for you if you want to swim at a secluded beach is going to Mansinam island.

Mansinam island - This is the largest island in the Dorey bay. Mansinam has beautiful coral reef along its southern beach. Don't forget to bring your own snorkeling mask if you want to see the beautiful underwater marine environment.

Lemon Island - This is an island that is located next to the Mansinam island. It is also surrounded by coral reef but most tourists prefer to swim and snorkel in Mansinam island because it is more secluded than Lemon island. To go to these islands, take a water taxi in Ketapang boat station.

Kwau village - This is a small village located in Arfak mountains. I promote this village for anybody who wants to see or study herbal medicine. Papuan indigenous people who live in Arfak mountains use plants to cure various kinds of diseases from malaria to intestinal worm and skin diseases.

Raimuti island is the smallest island in the Dorey bay of Manokwari. It is located south of the Rendani airport where jet planes from several Indonesian airlines take off and land every day. Raimuti island is also a very good place for travelers who want to see the beautiful coral reef by snorkeling. Take a public transportation at Wosi terminal to Arfai and then ask a local fisherman to bring you to the coral island.

There are still many interesting places to see in Manokwari regency which I haven't mentioned in this web-page. I will write more about them in my later articles. Through the promotion of eco-tourism of Manokwari in the internet, I hope that more tourists will come so that the local Papuan people will get alternative jobs and income. When they have money to buy food and send their children to schools, I hope that they will not be tempted to give up their lands and forest to greedy investors who are only interested in exploiting the logs from the tropical rainforest and clear the jungle for monoculture palm oil plantation.

Travel Guide Manokwari

The following articles are my recommendation, stories and experience when guiding foreign tourists who come to Manokwari of West Papua to enjoy the beauty of its natural scenery and the hospitality of the indigenous people. This website is aimed at promoting eco-tourism in the region to create jobs among the indigenous people and awareness among us about the importance of protecting and preserving tropical rainforest that is now facing extinction due to rapid deforestation.

Happy Traveling
