The tropical island of Numfor is my favorite snorkeling destination. I like to bring tourists there to enjoy snorkeling in the coral reef near Manem islet and birdwatching in the rainforest of the island. Because there are no diving shops in Manokwari city, I always asked the tourists who want to go to Numfor to bring their own snorkeling gear. Located near the equatorial line, the temperature in the tropical island is quite warm. Travelers do not need wet suit. They only need to bring snorkeling masks and fins. Bringing an underwater camera is also recommended. I personally have a Panasonic DMC-FT3 camera. This waterproof digital camera can shoot fish and coral reef as well as other marine creatures at the depths of up to 12 meters below the sea surface. With this underwater camera, I am able to record videos, and make a lot of underwater photographs that I will usually use for writing articles that are related to marine tourism in this website and my other blogs.

There are several places that are good for snorkeling. Some of them are coral reefs off the coast of Manem and Numpuri islets. Various species of tropical fish live in the reef. Because Numfor has not been popular as travel destination, very few tourists know the island. There is one positive point that travelers can take advantage of this situation. It means that the prices of sea and air transportation as well as accommodation are still cheap or affordable to most of the budget tourists. Most of the tourists who visit the tropical island say that it is really a tropical paradise.

As the tropical rainforest of the sea, coral reef should be preserved. It is a natural habitat for thousands of species of marine animals. Coral reef also absorbs CO2 during photosynthesis. I promote snorkeling tour to this tropical island to help the local Papuan villagers make some money from the eco-tourism program. When jobs are created from this alternative tourism, people or the islanders who work in this sector will be the ones who will preserve the coral reef.

To go to Numfor island, travelers need to fly to Jakarta or Denpasar or other major cities in Indonesia. After that, they can take a domestic flight to Manokwari - the capital of West Papua province. From this city, the trip to the island can be continued by ferry boat or airplane. As a tourist guide, I have been arranging trips for tourists who want to visit Numfor island and other places in West Papua.
