Snorkeling is a great way to see the beauty of the underwater world of coral reef environment. Coral reefs thrive mostly in tropical islands. One of them is New Guinea - the largest tropical island in the world. When we swim over the coral reef in Dorey bay in the bird's head region of New Guinea, we will be able to see marine wildlife such as tropical fish, corals, urchins, anemone and various species of sea stars. If you have never been snorkeling in tropical island, please, look at the underwater photographs of this article to get an idea of how beautiful a coral reef is. These underwater pictures were taken by tourists and me.
As a tourist guide, I often accompany tourists to do some snorkeling trips in Manokwari bay and Numfor island. When I mention about snorkeling trips, they do not mean that the trips are only about snorkeling and coral reef. There are other ecotourism activities such as hiking and bird watching. Manokwari bay as one of the snorkeling destinations in tropical island of New Guinea is also called Dorey bay. A British scientist, Alfred Russel Wallace, visited this bay in 1858. There are three small islands in the bay, Mansinam, Lemon and Raimuti. All of them are surrounded by coral reefs. Our journey for snorkeling in the bay begins in the morning at around 8 a.m or in the afternoon at around 2 p.m. depending on the weather.

From Hotel to Snorkeling Location
I will pick you up at the hotel where you stay in Manokwari city by a car. It takes around 40 minutes to reach the beach where a motorized outrigger boat waits for us. A fisherman will drive the boat to snorkeling location which is near the coastal area of Arfak mountains. After arriving over the coral reef, we will start making some preparations before snorkeling such as wearing the snorkeling mask, the snorkel/ breathing apparatus and fins. We will be snorkeling over coral reef in shallow water so, body suits that are suitable for cold water are not needed.

Snorkeling Time
When you are ready for exploring the coral reef, you slowly enter the water. By slowly immersing yourself in the water, you avoid scaring off the fish. You can begin paddling around the coral reef by gently pushing your fins. Move slowly over the coral reef if you want to see more fish around you. Fast movement can cause the reef fish to hide themselves inside the holes or spaces of the reefs or swim away from you. Don't forget that most of the fish can swim faster than you because they are in their natural habitat. Your snorkeling time ends in the midday or right before sunset.

Going back to your hotel
Our boat will take you back to the beach where our car has been waiting for us to transfer you back to your hotel. Still do not know where to stay in Manokwari? Visit this web page: http://charlesroring.blogspot.com/2010/01/cheap-hotel-in-manokwari.html
