Underwater photography is techniques of taking pictures or objects below the surface of the water. Someone who is taking underwater images needs a camera that is covered by a watertight container. There are digital cameras that are now sold by manufacturers that are equipped with special watertight casings for shootings up to 3 meters depth under the water or sea level. For shooting pictures at depths of 9 to 15 or 20 meters, the photographer has to be a certified scuba diver. He or she will need a special watertight camera and powerful lamps. At these depths, the sunlight is reduced to around 60 to 70 percent.
If the watertight container is made of plastic, especially the one that covers or protects the lens of the camera, the photo quality will not be good. Glass is still better in continuing the light penetration into the lens of the camera. The clearer the glass cover and the lens, the brighter and the better will be the picture quality of the photographs. Sometimes underwater current is very strong, photographer has to take shelter or move behind a rock to protect himself from being pushed away by the current. The best time to take picture underwater is when the weather is clear. Sunlight can easily penetrate into the water and brighten the color of the corals and ornamental fish. The seawater is calm when the high tide or low tide reaches is maximum or minimum point, at that time when the photographer goes down, he will not experience strong current.
Nearly two weeks ago, I accompanied David Scott, a tourist from London, traveling around the islands in the Dore bay of Manokwari. We snorkeled around the islands and I was able to shoot some nice pictures of the corals and some ornamental fish in the area. The best pictures could be obtained during the low tide with a clear weather i.e. when the sun was shining brightly. I used my digital camera Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W30. The corals look like flowers. It was at 3.30 p.m. when I took the photographs of the corals. The softcorals had disappeared from the surface of the hard corals. To make the photographs to load faster on my manokwari papua blog, I optimized them using Adobe Photoshop CS3. I hope that many of you can still enjoy the photos of the underwater world that I shot in the Dorey bay. Just click the link Snorkeling in the Dorey bay of Manokwari. by Charles Roring
