Taking object that are moving is difficult if we are not experience enough in using our digital photo camera. The quality of the photographs will not be good enough due to the movements of the objects. The images of dogs pouncing on a deer while it was crossing a small river can be seen on my Manokwari Papua blog. It is a fascinating experience due to the rarity of such scene. To shoot the pictures, my friend Paul used my HP iPAQ rx 3000 series Mobile Media Companion that is equipped with digital camera feature at its back. The dogs jumped to the see after receiving an order from their masters who were accompanying Paul and Zeth. They were traveling in the forest to see natural places that could be developed as tourist destination for our eco-tourism program.
I personally hardly ever use the digital camera feature of the Pocket PC HP iPAQ rx 3000 because I have got Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W30 which has optical zoom. In addition, the Carl Zeis lens of the equipment is very good. It can capture picture with high clarity. The photographs of the dogs and the deer were made when the weather was not bright enough. To increase the brightness of the pictures, I modify them in the Adobe Photoshop CS3. I also sharpen it with this software. Please, also read How to photograph object in the dark
It is interesting to know that actually these travelers were not going hunting at that time. They only wanted to travel around the forest and the dogs spotted the deer while it was in the middle of the river. I hope that by showing the photos of this scene, more tourists from abroad will be interested in visiting Senopi village of Manokwari. I have written a lot of articles about ecotourism in Manokwari city of West Papua province of the Republic of Indonesia added with various photographs that I shot at sea, on the islands, in the city and in the mountain.
In late August 2011, I bought another digital camera that is equipped telephoto feature. Now I use it for taking pictures of distant subjects such as birds, and mountains. It is a Nikon Coolpix P500. I like the camera very much because it can also shoot close-up subjects such as butterflies and flowers using Macro Shooting Techniques. I have made some close-up pictures of eupholus beetle using Nikon Coolpix P500. The Nikkor lens of the camera is really great in producing high quality pictures of the insect. I am still reading the manual book of the super zoom camera. I have tried using some of its features particularly the lower exposure and shutter speed to take pictures in low light condition. It will time some time before I can really master techniques that are usually used by professional photographers.
As a matter of fact I don't any plan to become a professional photographer who usually uses D-SLR camera. I just want to know certain techniques of photography that I can use to make compelling pictures for the promotion of ecotourism in West Papua.
For me, ecotourism program that I am now developing with the indigenous Papuan people can become an alternative solution of income generation in areas where the economic condition of the people are not really good. In other words, eco-tourism can help improve the living standard of the villagers in areas where tropical rainforest and coral reef still exist so that the people will not easily be tempted to sell their lands and forest to loggers or even mining company.
