I was cycling along the road of the northern coast of Manokwari when I saw some birds flying high above my head. At that time, I was carrying my digital camera at my back. I stopped my bike and took the camera out of my bag. It was a Nikon Coolpix P500 with 36x optical zoom. I aimed the lens to the birds which were around two hundred meters above me. I pressed the shutter button several times while the birds were circling around to look for fish in the sea. Suddenly they flew away from me. These birds have very sharp eyes. Perhaps, they saw me taking pictures of them and thinking that I was trying to shoot them. Yes, I was shooting them not by gun but by my telephoto digital camera. Shooting birds that were flying in the sky was really difficult. My camera could not easily focus the flying birds. After taking some pictures of these birds, I returned home and took a book entitled, Birds of New Guinea. It is used by most of the birders in West Papua to identify the birds which they see while birding in the rainforest. Because the pictures do not show the close up images of the birds, I could only guess that they were Sooty Tern (Sterna Fuscata) or perhaps kites.
In addition to the picture of the terns, I also took some pictures of the scenery, trees and island in the north coast of Manokwari. It is a nice place for cycling, birdwatching and marine sport activities. While cycling along Bremi village, I met a boy who was also riding his bike. I took a photograph of him with Kaki island as a background. I was against the sunlight and as a result the picture that I made was not really good. When I showed the picture to the boy he said that he really liked it very much. Kaki island is a small island located off the shore of Nuni village. It is surrounded by coral reef that is rich of tropical fish. Tourists who like snorkeling can go there to see the beauty of the underwater world of the tropical island.
My cycling trip along the northern coast of Manokwari that Sunday 22 August 2011 was a really difficult one. The weather was really hot. But the sceneries that I saw during that day were really beautiful. One of them was the rainforest along the banks of a river. I stopped in the middle of a bridge to take picture of this river. Its really beautiful to be there. I heard the sounds of birds in trees near the river but I was not able to see them. Watching birds in rainforest is difficult because most of the birds were covered by branches, twigs and leaves of dense trees. They need to bring their own snorkeling mask, fins, and waterproof camera with them if they want to explore the coral reef. As a nature lover, I have developed alternative tourism program for Manokwari since 2010. With promotions on my blog and websites, I can see that more tourists visit Manokwari.
