Here are some photographs shot by me using Nikon Coolpix P500. This compact camera is powerful to capture distant subjects in open nature or in sport events. As a nature lover, I spend a lot of my time traveling in the rainforest of New Guinea - the largest tropical island in the world. While walking through the jungle, I see wild animals such as birds, deer, snakes, soa-soa (giant lizards), butterflies, beetles, and etc. With my Nikon P500, I shoot these subjects and present them in my rainforest tour blog (http://manokwaripapua.blogspot.com) and in this website. Besides taking pictures of wild animals, I also like shooting flowers and trees that are usually found in the rainforest. With the photographs that I made, I want to inform the readers of my blog and website about the beauty of the rainforest and raise the awareness among us about the importance of preserving this magnificent environment.

The first picture is a tree sparrow sitting on a twig calling its friends. I shot this bird on a hot sunny day behind my house. Tree sparrow is a species that we can easily see in most towns and cities in Indonesia. They eat grains or food leftover thrown by city dwellers at the backyard of their houses or around shops and restaurants.

The second picture is a close up shot of eupholus beetle in the tropical rainforest of the north coast region of Manokwari.  I made this photograph when I was hiking with two Dutch tourists and 1 Austrian traveler along the bank of Asai river. Eupholus beetles have colors that look attractive to insect collectors. On ebay, people trade the eupholus beetles just like the trade or exchange stamps. As a nature lover, I do not agree if insects are caught for trading except for scientific purposes. Before shooting this beetle, I had to adjust the setting of the camera to macro so that I could make close up picture of the insect.

Still on the discussion of photographs taken by Nikon P500, the CMOS sensor of the camera greatly enhance the capability of this photographic device in shooting subjects in low light condition. The third picture shows two young singing starling birds (aplonis cantoroides) sitting on the branches of a tall tree. Actually there were around fifteen of them on the tree but this close up shot had left the other birds out of coverage. Starling birds like to fly in groups. Birds play very important role in the survivability of rainforest. They eat the fruits of the tropical trees and disperse the seeds everywhere. This function is vital in helping the trees to expand their growth areas.

As the user of Nikon super zoom camera, I have to say that with the Coolpix P500, I can make great photographs without having to spend a lot of my money on buying expensive telephoto lens D-SLR camera that is usually needed by professional photograph. Because most of the pictures that I make are only for giving illustrations to my articles that are presented on this website and my other blog http://charlesroring.blogspot.com, I think, the Nikon Coolpix P500 is enough for me.

The original pictures are very big and not suitable for online presentation. I have to resize them on Adobe Photoshop to make their file sizes small so that they can be loaded faster on your computer screen.

I still have plan to buy a D-SLR camera but it will take sometime before I can purchase one because I have to save my money first. The photographs that I make from nature will help all of us give more appreciation to the wildlife and strengthen our commitment to support efforts on preserving rainforest that is important in absorbing CO2 gases that we emit every day. In other words, rainforest help us reduce global warming. by Charles Roring
